What is MCP?
MCP means Model Context Protocol. It provides a common way for compatible AI clients to discover and call tools exposed by a server. In a Shopify workflow, those tools may offer access to store information or supported actions through an integration.
MCP is a protocol, not a Shopify permission. A client knowing how to call a tool does not mean it is authorized to read your store or modify an order. Authentication, account authorization, and the integration’s permission checks still determine what a request can do.
A connection link does not replace consent
Before connecting an MCP server, check who operates it, which tools it exposes, and what account access it requests. Use the client’s documented connection flow and avoid sharing API keys or other credentials in a chat prompt.
Permissions can exist at more than one level. Shopify or another connected app controls the underlying account access; a connection layer can further restrict which tools a particular agent may call. A tool’s availability does not override the underlying app’s authorization requirements.
Compatibility is not the same as a live integration
An AI client supporting MCP does not by itself establish that a specific Shopify integration works with it. Connection methods, authentication support, tool support, and release status must all be checked for that client.
In Agiexa, OpenClaw and Hermes have plugin support. Additional connections for ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Grok, and Meta agents are coming soon via MCP. Do not treat those planned connections as available today. Agiexa’s public app launch is planned for November 2026; the waitlist is the place to request launch updates.
Questions to ask before connecting
Assess a connection by its access boundaries and documented capabilities rather than the protocol name alone. Start with a small read-only task, review the returned source data, and expand access only when a specific task requires it.
For requests involving more than one app, check each connection separately. A Shopify connection does not imply access to an email inbox or CRM. Review the corresponding integration page for supported tools and account requirements.
- Is this client connection released and documented?
- Who operates the server and receives the request?
- Which account is connected, and which tools are enabled?
- Can access be restricted for this agent?
- How are consequential actions reviewed and verified?
